Re: Heading to Africa, which gun should I take?

I will be in RSA in 1 month for PG. Decided 1 year ago that I wanted a 375 H&H to take. Since I was a little boy, I wanted to go to Africa and always wanted an H&H. To bad I had to wait until my late 40s to fulfil it. Anyway, since that decision was made, I have shot this gun often and taken it elk, deer and antelope hunting. The key was that I know how to handle the gun. Shoot and shoot often whatever you decide to take. As stated in this forum, the answer to the question of "what gun and what caliber" is whatever you can shoot well!

Well, be happy you are going in your late 40's - late 50's for me and Africa is still just a dream hunt for the future. For a 1-gun hunt for anything in Africa, I think a .375 is the ultimate - those long, sleek ctgs. have an alure that is difficult to resist. Although I had an .375H&H long ago and have built smaller cased and same capacity wildcats that duplicate or exceed the .375's ballistics, I still had to have another and it's sitting in the gun room right now.

Yes - by all means get a .375 - but - practise with it until you know the gun and it does whatever your mind tells it to do. Become one with it, grasshopper - what a terrific ctg. & rifle to know. Before going to Africa, learn the rifle until it shoots like a varmint rifle for you. Properly sized in fit and weight, they are the perfect all-round rifle. There are other ctgs. that will do the job - the loading manuals are full of them - BUT - they aren't .375H&H's. Do take an "African" round to Africa - but learn it first.

I wish you success in your hunt. Good choice.
