Re: Scent for Africa??

I'm going to toss this in and try my best to word it in a way that :

A} Prevents you guys from thinking I'm nuts and a total freak

B} Gets a couple of you to try the same thing

Here goes...

I totally agree with what has been said here. Sort of. Really, whatever you do, particularly in a warm climate is going to be pretty much erased by perspiration very quickly.

But...

Along the lines of scents,

I have experimented for years with various "Home Grown" scents and have found the following.

QUANTITY matters, and for even that reason alone most store-bought scents are quite ridiculous as they come in essentially tiny bottles and are thus in essence {no pun intended} "snake oil". How many of you fellows have smelled an elk? A bull is literally varnished underneath with continuous applications of "body fluids". Ditto a big billy goat.

IF you want to see an interesting attractant or something to hold game on a trail, try several gallons of your own urine. Yup, pop in a DVD of Lawrence of Arabia, sit down to a big pitcher of iced tea or a six-pack of you favorite brew, and keep an empty milk jug handy.

Pee Away!

I once read that as soon as the aromatic hormones evaporate, most all urine smells the same, even to game. I don't know if that is true, but I do know that deer and elk are fascinated by high concentrations of human urine. A bit of scratched up earth is all it takes, with the urine dumped into it, and all over a neighboring tree to-boot. I do NOT know if this represents "bait" so check with your game department first.

I have mixed sheep, horse and cattle dung into my "Love Elixirs" and all seem to work pretty much as well as the other, and none seem to add much over 200 proof neat People-Pee.

And when you see them eat the urine-soaked earth or take bites of the urine-soaked tree limbs or rub their heads and shoulders all over same, don't be surprised!

One last thing, as far as cover scents are concerned.

A friend of mine who specializies in shooting big whitetail bucks uses a pair of electric heated socks that have been soaked in many bottles of store-bought deer scent. He hangs the socks up by his blind and swears that once the heat kicks in they work like a charm. I've never used them, but the concept is interesting.
