Yes it sucks! I pay £1.16-1.19/litre for diesel and about £1.11-1.15/litre for petrol... I just came back from Egypt and the drivers there told me it was abou US$0.15/litre there (subsidised of course) but it takes the piss. Of course most of the cost of petrol in the UK is tax - 2007 fuel duty (as of 1 October 2007-think it may be higher now) in the UK is: 50.35 pence per litre for ultra-low sulphur unleaded petrol/diesel 53.65 pence per litre for conventional unleaded petrol 56.94 pence per litre for conventional diesel At least I am getting about 50mpg in my diesel VW Passat but that means I am taxed over £1,800 per year just to drive to work!! They say that the tax is set to discourage car use and promote public transport use. All I can say is with a tax take like we have we should have the best subsidised public transport system in the world.... |
