Cape Buffalo death fight
|
|
Some interesting photos sent to me by a couple of members.
Occasionally seen with stags with locked antlers but not cape buffalo.

Sad end for two warriors. Death in combat is an honorable end though. Both are beautiful bulls too.

Incredible episode. It would have been an awesome sight to see. I am surprised that the ground has not been churned up more.

Also strange that no carnivores either killed them or have started eat them ,as it looks like they have been dead a few hours aleast ! Not normal in Africa to last that long !

They don't look locked together at all. Perhaps enough when they were fighting but I wonder if they broke their necks instead.

There appears to be blood from both bull's noses. Not the physiological response you'd expect from locked horns.
I think we can rule out starvation as a cause of death.
I'm suss but can't tell why.

I think one of the horns had punctured the skull of the other one as you can just see the tip in the side of the head.
Maybe that killed it, it fell over and the other one couldn't release because of the position.

I too suspect broken necks as the cause of death.

I tend to conclude the same - the nose bleed would be a result of the head injury. The one at the bottom could have had its neck broken with the fall impact. It also looks like he got a kick in the balls!

Looks like the horn may have penetrated the eye...

I would agree that a broken neck caused at least one death. If upright it would seem they would need to have their heads/horns on each others shoulders and behind the others boss for leverage.
Very unusual!

i reckon one has flipped the other somehow and a broken neck (or necks) has happened, the horn attitudes are of course not natural....use your thumbs and forefingers to make imaginary pairs of horns and give it a trial fight at the keyboard, you will get the flip over idea easily.
