My favorite rifle for non-DG is a custom 300 Win. Mag. that's based on a reworked Model 70 action, McMillan stock, a light 24" Kreiger bbl., custom scopemounts, custom bottommetal, custom magazine system, and a Leica 3.5-10x scope. It's a rather plain-looking, all-black rifle, but it's precise, ultra-reliable, never changes zero, and whatever has taken a 180 gr. Nosler Partition from it has gone down post-haste. While its quality and workmanship are absolutely first-rate, it's not exactly a cosmetically-gratifying piece of ordinace and it sort of flies in the face of "blessed tradition". So it tends to draw sneers from guys who are still living in the mists of the past, or simply insist on fine wood. But in all other respects, whatever a hunting rifle really and truly needs to be, this one surely is. I've used it from Utah to Tanzania on scores and scores of big game animals, and it's never let me down yet. If I ever shoot the barrel out on it, I'll have it rebarreled to the same chambering and keep on hunting with it.......... AD |
