I have to agree with 500. From my experience the 45-70 has a couple feet of drop at 300 and 4-6 feet of drop at 400. I have never tried anything past that but I think the results at 300 and 400 speak for themselves. I prefer the Marlin as an open sights rifle for less then 200 yards and it performs very well.
