The 222 Remington had its "day in the sun" with varmint and later bench rest shooters loving it but was soon overshadowed by the .223R. The same can be said for the 222 Mag which was a slightly elongated 222.
Bullshit.
The .222 does what it was designed to do. Hunt. Shoot small game. Kill small furred game.
The .223 was designed as a military cartridge. Slightly extra velocity. Failed as a good military cartridge as well.
As the .222 already was faster than ideal on minimising fur damage, especially closer ranges, increasing velocity is even worse ie the .223.
All the .223 did was to work in semi auto guns.
