I have used a .318 Westley Richards bolt gun made by them in the 1950s, since I acquired it in 1964 or 65. It is a fabulous gun and an even better cartridge. Oddity; it has a 28" barrel. It has been compared to and was better than a .333 or .338 OKH or .338/06 long before those cartridges were even thought of. I have taken whitetail deer, moose, black bear, musk ox, caribou and a walrus with it and it has never failed to do its job of putting meat on the table. It is my primary moose rifle. Good shock factor, penetration, expansion, a fairly light recoil and little meat spoilage. I'm just a little leery of using it against any of the large, brown, grizzly or especially polar bears, which abounded in the region I was living. I had a .425 Westley Richards bolt gun for them. I give credit to the Laplanders who go against polar bears with 6.5 X 55s. Westley Richards loads ammo for it, brass is available for reloading, bullets and powders abound, what more can you ask! A Classic British Cartridge made available for today's hunting environment. Absolutely the last gun I'll ever part with! ![]() |
