Some guns need them, my mate used to use a 338/378 wby mag and it would have been damn near unshootable without one.
Although with one it was physically painful to be anywhere near when it went off.
I had a break on my 375H&H, but that was a vais muzzle break that didn't increase the noise by much and it was a 6.5lb gun.
