Re: BIg Horn Armory.. Lever Action in 500S&W

I only paid $1,000 for my 1886 .45-90 and it took ele and buff in Africa with 450 grain mono metal solids at 2150 fps. No scope sights either.
The 450 grain Kodiak FMJ at 2150 shot through buff making them DRT. American Bison in Texas also.
Our handloaded 300 grain Nosler PP at 2200 fps whacked PG and nailed a big male leopard to the sand.

Sort of takes the mystery and exotic romance out African animals does it not? Maybe that is why certain RSA DG PHs hate American hunters bringing our "big" gun down.

PS the 1886 45-70 nailed buff too. It seems that with the proper .458 bullet, 1800 t0 1900 fps is the killing threshold.

I think all the Big Horns and Turnbull Dress Ups are great, but not necessary for dg.

IF I remember correctly, believe the old saying was 2000-2100fps was optimum back in the day for heavy DG bullets.. however, think a lot of the 458W Mags were much slower than the advertised velocity when it first hit the market due to several factors.. In todays world with better powders, its a better caliber carried by many in Africa..

One of the reasons I prefer the .416Rem.. cruising at 2350 to 2400 fps..works well on close up and personal to longer PG shots..
