I've been in touch with elgin Gates' son and he's putting together a book on his North American trophy hunting from notes, magazine articles and unpublished stories.
I'm reading Trophy Hunter in Africa right now. Very good book. Jim Rikhoff mentions in the intro that Elgin was working on "Trophy Hunter in North America" at the time Africa was published. It's a shame that North America hasn't been published as of yet.
Also, I think the big elephant that Elgin took was with Joe Blacklaws "loaner" Westley Richards 470. Elgin did kill a Cape Buffalo in Kenya with his 300 Wby, shooting it in the ear, but commented that he really didn't feel properly armed, though everything worked out well. This was the buff they used for bait for the black leopard he killed.
