I have to confess to a real soft spot for the 308. I have never done any match shooting but for hunting I think it handles most situations. The ones I come up against anyway. Hunted with a couple once where the husband used a 375 and his wife used a 308 because the husband thought she could not handle the recoil. She smoke two buffalo and a scrub bull with one shot kills while the husband did not put on the same type of display. Its a good balance all round like the story says.I am looking to build a light pack hunting rifle shortly and the 308 is pretty hard to go past.

Agree---My wife uses a .308 for elk..smokes them every time shooting 165 gr accubonds..longer shots are no problem..I am not an accubond fan for faster calibers..but for those around the mv of 3000fps or less, it works well..

IMHO, there is something a bit magical about the .30 caliber when used on elk..knocks them hard and they stay down..seems like a perfect fit..
