Re: So... Varmint Rifles?

Nitro- the .17 HMR is quite effective. When we first tried them, we went right out to 240yards on field rats, but found we got too many crawl-offs.

We've not set a range limit of 200yards and this works out well, as the rifles we have for this round are capable of head and chest hits out to that range.

This little rimfire has proved to be quite accurate, with Len's Marlin holding in around 1/2" at 100 meters and my Martini doing a bit better when using Hornady or Fed 17gr. Vmax loads.

My new Marlin has shown to prefer the Winchester 20gr. HP loads and runs them just over 2,500fps (2,375fps factory stats), making it a much better round for slightly larger game, like fox and coyotes, than the Vmax 17gr., which is a bit soft for these.

I have 3 rifles in 17HMR..2 being an Anchutz..one bull barrel that is very lethal not just on the gophers but also on Prairie dogs out to 200 and slightly over using Hornady ammo..have a Leupold 4-12 on it..incredibly accurate combination..another is a CZ--also very accurate with a set trigger..easily a 150yd rimfire...

The 22 mag has more of a "toss" factor when shooting the P-dogs..but not as flat shooting at the 17HMR...IMHO
