From many sources in the gun world I have heard that at best they are a crap shoot and that factory support is next to non existant. Inconsistency in accuracy and simplified design to reach price point.
The first generation of Kimbers from the 1980s were well made semi custom rifles. My Super America model 82, 22lr is superb and keeps up with my Anschutz 1422D for accuracy. The SA model 89 was also very nice with integral scope bases. The African in .416 Rigby was their finest DGR.
Today's Kimbers compare to the Winchester super grade without the cheek-piece and wrap around checkering. Yes they may be hand checkered but nothing to brag about.
There are several reviews, on line, of people who own the current models 84,8400 that will give you a sense of whether it's the right rifle for you.
As for me nothing comes close to a Browning FN.
