I've actually seen all three calibers (7x61, 308 NM and 358 NM) in S&L rifles whole a child in the 70's growing up on the Alaska Peninsula. They were owned by a bear guide who used the 7x61 for caribou and the 358 for the big coastal brown bears. Later on he got a 308 NM and pretty much retired the other two unless he had to go after a really big bear in the alders with the 358.

I reckon that had Norma not beat Winchester to the punch, they both would have been branded by their trade name and who knows if there would even be a 338 today.
