Re: Blaser R 8--

I have had a couple of R93s and one R8. All were incredibly accurate such that groups were sinfully small, bordering on single ragged holes at 100 yards!!! calibers: .223, ..270 Win, 300 Win Mag, .375 H&H and the R8 was a 9.3x62.

I absolutely loved the weight and handling gracefulness of the R93s, but both were guns that went "click" when they should have gone "bang". The R8 was a beefier gun at the expense of the graceful feel of the R93.

The R8 worked flawlessly with factory ammo, but was a stubborn bitch with any and all handloads and refused to chamber any of them, short of beating the action forward with a block of firewood. I even went and bought a second die set to ensure I didnt have a die set problem.

In so far as ergonomics, my biggest beef is with the shape of the trigger guard. When the recoil goes up with the larger calibers, the trigger guard was sure to smash the hell out of my second finger.

I truly love the concept of the speed of the straight pull, and I keep trying to convince myself that I need to try just one more time in the hopes of finding a rifle that will make me happy in the field, but sometimes the hassle of fighting with the idiosyncracies of a tool makes for an unpleasant outing. I love the takedown concept as well, but I'll be damned if I'll fly to the other side of the world on an expensive hunting trip with anything other than the utmost trustworthy of rifles. My doubles travel in a nice small form factor, so Blaser is out.

Btw: I also have a K95 that is accurate in the extreme, and I have brought it as a backup on a long 24 hour truck drive to go caribou hunting, but I am having how shall we say? uh...... trust issues with it after the experiences of the straight pull rifles to the point that it would be unconscionable for me to rely solely on it. My K95 has always been properly behaved thus far........hmmmm.
