I just got back from Natal RSA and I am doing what I believe all true rifle loonies do rig after a great trip, they build the rifle that would have been perfect for that trip! I brought my Chapuis SxS 9.3x74r and took a couple of bushbucks with it. I also brought a Weatherby Ultralight in 338-06 and this was not so great. Not flat shooting enough, trigger was a touch heavy and it was a compromise for my father so he could bring his 6.5x284 but use the 338-06 to hunt Eland. We basically hunted bushbucks for 11 days straight, we looked over at least 25 decent rams and took a handful. The hunting was in two very different styles. The first was stalking through river systems and snap shooting with the 9.3x74r. The rifle was perfect for this and I loved the red dot on the Leupold VX6 1-6x scope. The second was sort of a cross between sheep hunting and varmint hunting. Sneaking just below ridge lines and glassing for rams on the opposite slope. My PH Ryan Pinaar guides for sheep in BC so this kind of makes sense. I used the 338-06 for this and it was OK at best. What would have been perfect would have been a flat shooting single shot rifle in something like 26 Nosler, 257 Weatherby or 270 Win Short mag. I'd like a single shot with a 25-26 inch barrel to keep length and weight in check. I'd like a takedown to travel in a small case with my double. Airports suck! This is what I'm thinking so far. -Blaser k95 in 257 Weatherby -Custom Ruger #1 in 26 Nosler (takedown, removable rear stock) -Does the Dakota m10 come in a takedown? -Custom Thompson Encore in 26 Nosler -What models am I missing?
