Re: Boss & Co first ever bolt actioned rifle 300 H&H

Quote:

I can't believe that monstrosity of a scope is going on such an elegant rifle. It will end up looking like a clipper ship under full sail, with all the attention drawn to the scope, instead of where it belongs, to the rifle. An illuminated reticle for plains game? Or does he plan to hunt in Germany and snipe his game out of a Hochsitz at twilight?

The size of the objectiuve lens dictates that the scope be mounted high enough to clear the barrel, and the size of the ocular lens dictates that the scope be mounted high enough to clear the bolt handle, which will put it far above the iron sight line of the elegantly proportioned stock, so the happy owner will have to shoot through the scope with his cheek barely touching the stock.

See if you can't talk him into a nice Leupold with a 32mm objective and a comparatively slim ocular. 4X is all you ever need in the game field, unless you're shooting prarie dogs. My Model 70 .300 H&H has a 4X Lyman All American sitting on it, and has accounted for around 100 head of African plains game.

I must say, I have never liked those big Swarovskis with that leaver on top. Like you, I would also select a 4x BUT it would be a German Schmidt&Bender over the Leopold. Some may say slightly under powered for a 300H&H though.
