A lot of good advice here regarding steel butt plates.
My 360No.2 and my 425 Westley have steel butts. Both are pretty sharp in the recoil department but have not bruised my shoulder even when putting 10-15 rounds downrange.
My 461Gibbs has one as well and is the worst in felt recoil of the three.
IMO, a .308 should be a breeze to shoot if you follow the advice given above.
