I have a few ex-mil Mausers with the original stocks and steel buttplates. (I have a 308, 8mms and a 30/06.) I don't notice it when I fire them but after a shooting session (anywhere between 20 and 50 rounds), my shoulder is red and very slightly tender. Never turns into a bruise though, and doesn't put me off shooting them.
