+1 on checking scope and leaving on lowest power unless time and circumstance allow for it to be wond up.

Check out the Leupy VX3 2.5-8X36?, small, light and the Zeiss Duralyte in 2.5-8X42. Cost more but awesome optics and good eye relief. Also the Trijacon 1.5-4X24 with picket post. Good clear optics, tough as, plenty of eye relief and the no battery illumination of the triangle on top of the post is brilliant.
