Please don't discount the 243 too lightly, on medium game and assuming the right bullets it's lethal out to 300 meters.
Understand our European cousins having some issues, having seen some of their boars I can understand the apprehension. More to do with the style of hunting (moving game normally) than other reasons.

In the semi-auto legal days here in Aus, the 7.62x39 had obviously gotten really popular. I saw it in action on many occasions and worked well with commercial ammo (bloody disaster with FMJ's). With commercial ammo out to 100m it worked well and was quite emphatic on medium game, normally pigs, goats and the like. When range extended, say 150m - 200m it started to become anaemic.

The 243 on the other hand, on similar game is quite emphatic out to 300 meters.
