Here is a quote that I read on AfricanHunter.com that I thought anyone who is a fan of the 30.06 cartridge, like me, would enjoy reading: "The Zimbabwean Parks department used 7,62x54R and 30-06 for almost all their culling (over 23,000 elephants in the 1980’s), whilst .303’s and AK’s (7.62x39) in the hands of peasant farmers and poachers have probably killed more elephants than any other calibre. In short, shot placement is everything." I was a little surprised to learn that the 30.06 had that many elephant kills to it credit. I knew that elephants have certainly been taken with the 30.06, but not in those kinds of numbers. Now, the Zim Parks Dept. surely issued the .06 as much for economy and availability of ammo as for the actual power of the cartridge, but even still, I would consider that to be quite a testimonial of the capability of the old .06.
