I've got an FN in 308 Norma, used it in Africa on plains game earlier this year with 200 grain Woodleights.
I wouldn't consider anything shorter than a 24 inch barrel, muzzle blast could be a real problem and you're not likely to achieve magnum velocities with the short barrel.
IMHO stick with the Win Mag brass and ammunition is far more readily availalbe and less expensive.
