Cheap Rifle, Pricey Scope??

I am looking at buying a rifle /scope for my 18 yr old son for long range beanfield shooting.
I am leaning toward a Savage Varmint FVSS in 270 WSM with 26" barrel at 9 pounds, synthetic bedded stock,accutrigger, etc, with a Swarovski AV 3-10x TDS scope.
The scope may end up cost 2x as much as the rifle.
May go with a 50% cheaper Zeiss Conquest instead--
Thoughts anyone??
