Re: 35 Whelen Report

Hello IronBuck,

Read your piece about the 35 whelen. Welcome to the 35 caliber hunter/shooters group. I've been hunting for years with a 35 whelen and 358 win. Nothing drops 'em like a 35 cal in most situations. I've never had any animal shot with either 35 take more than 2 steps! Most have dropped where they were standing.
The round nose is a great choice for the 35 whelen. I load that round in a Sierra 200 gr RN over 56 grs of 4064. I also load the Barnes-X 200 gr over that same powder charge for about 2600 fps. The Barnes never stays inside the deer or bear. Always a complete pass through. Experimenting with the 225gr Nosler Bal Tip has been great. It dropped a moose at 169 yds(laser range finder) with one shot. He never knew what hit 'em!
The jacket is heavier on the bal tip from .338 on up so you can expect better penetration on the bigger bal tips than from .30cal on down.
My Rem 700 classic shoots very well. I'm honestly shooting 1" groups with this gun and have the targets saved in my reloading book to prove it. Very accurate cartridge if you play around with handloads a bit.
I have no hutning experience with the 250 grainer but I'm sure it is all that the 225 is and more. Good luck with your new whelen and go get some critters!
