25-06 into 9.3x62

Hi everyone.

Just thought I'd put up a post on my rifle, a Winchester Classic, being rebarreled from 25-06 to a 9.3x62. My preference lately is to have rifles that are not needlessly heavy for calibre so after purchasing a Kimber Classic Select Grade rifle in 25-06 I was thinking of a pretty easy rebarrel for my Winchester rifle. The 9.3 seems to be making a real comeback and thought this would be a fun choice.

Anyway, AFRO408 agreed to do some work on the rifle and hopefully will post up some pics here of the progress of the transformation. It's very nearing completion......

Here is a pic of the donor rifle-

Cheers,
Mark.

Sounds interesting.

It made the comeback years ago.

Re: 25-06 into 9.3x62

1.....re barrel in 9.3x62, 23" long.
2.....Express sights ( fixed rear ) Ivory front sight.
3.....Bolt release built up and checkered.
4.....Ebony or Horn forend tip, to hide the old sling swivel hole.
5.....Rust blue all metal work.

Some progress photos of the job.
Unscrewed the 25-06 barrel and got all the relevant measurements for fitting the 9.3 barrel.
In this first pic, you can see the position of the extractor and feed cutout, on the bolt face, with the bolt locked in firing position.

The controlled feed Winchesters have a cone breech and a cutout for the end of the extractor.

All the measuring tools needed to fit the barrel.

Re: 25-06 into 9.3x62

The barrel looks like it will fit nicely, without much stock removal. Only in the Knox form section.
http://i568.photobucket.com/albums/ss122/243myra/P7140004.jpg

After reducing the Knox form diameter, to the same as original barrel, I cut the barrel to length and got it running true, so I can then ream the chamber and screwcut the shank.
<iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/QzxMuM3kOqA" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
I managed to get this bore running within a quarter of a thou. You can also see how high the lands are in this Walther barrel. Each division represents .001"

http://i568.photobucket.com/albums/ss122/243myra/P7140005.jpg
The 9.3x62 reamer has a particularly long throat and I took a pic of what the throat looks like, before cutting deeper. The reamer had just started cutting the neck recess.
http://i568.photobucket.com/albums/ss122/243myra/P7140003.jpg

The barrel is chambered, threaded, crowned and fitted to the action, the next thing to do is to cut the extractor recess.

Setting up the barrel shank to cut the extractor relief.

Cutting the relief.

The barrel fits nicely.

I first 'tin' the matching surfaces and clean all traces of the acid flux from the pieces.

The sight bases and sling swivel are soldered on nice and level using 6% Silver solder and resin flux.
I then clean all the excess solder off with a soft chisel, diamond hone and emery cloth lubed with Kerosene.

Barrel in the white, ready for sight regulation and bluing.

The original bedding was good, but needed relieving behind the square lug below the rear tang. This is a common problem that I encounter and on a large cal rifle, contact here will result in splitting the wrist of the stock, or removing a complete wedge of wood.

A mortice was cut for the secondary recoil lug and some wood from the side of the channel for the sight base.

Front Night sight was fitted and some metal needed to be removed from the bottom of the dovetail, to allow the flip up night sight to work smoothly.

Rear sight leaf was fitted and will be regulated to 50m
The rear of the sight bases was stippled as well.

The bolt release lever knob was built up with weld, shaped and knurled.

Talley cross bolt was fitted behind the recoil lug and then it and the bolt release were Nitre blued.

FWIW I thought that a nitro bolt action round if sighted for 25 would also be on the mark at 100.

That is one of those "rules of thumb" {AKA Old Wive's Tales} that if "Minute of Pie Plate" is your goal is close enough to true, but isn't otherwise.

Depends on sight height, and of course specific quirks of rifle and caliber.

No.

It doesn't work that way at all. Next time you are at the range, bring a pile of rifles and loads and try it. You might be impressed with some and others not even a little bit.

Re: 25-06 into 9.3x62

Yes, it doesn't always work out like that.

I used to shoot Field Rifle with a .308 and it was zeroed at 200m and was spot on at 25m.
The target distances are 25, 50, 100, 200m, so I would aim directly at 25 & 200, hold at 6 oclock on the ten ring for 50m and at 6 oclock on the 9 ring at 100m.

Agree with what 9.3 and Afro say.

Whole range of calibre specific factors come into it,
although by changing components you can get a number of different calibres to have roughly the same trajectory.

Re: 25-06 into 9.3x62

The test firing and regulating has been postponed ( calf branding next to the private range that I'm lucky to have the use of ) so I did a bit more work on the stock, fitting the Buff horn forend tip.

The old forend tip had to be cut off behind the forward sling swivel, squared up and the dowel holes drilled.

The piece of Northern Territory Water Buffalo horn was given the same treatment.

Then the pieces were glued together using this boat building Epoxy with it's anti fungal properties. It's nice and thick and doesn't run back out of the joint.

Sight regulation will be next week now.

Tony

No worries Mark.
What goes around comes around....................I hope.

Will be a joy to use,I have two.

I too think the 9.3x62 is on a big come back when you can buy a $550 Zastava or an $1100 Ruger with express sights as well as Sako Black Bear.

After shooting Scrub bulls with the 375H&H and the 9.3x62 in the last 3 months I cant tell the difference between them.

You will love it as Tony does Great work.!!

Re: 25-06 into 9.3x62

It's a wonderful cartridge. I once converted a M96 Husqvarna from 9.3x57 but since I already had a .375 and a .404 and a .450 I couldn't figure out why I had a 9.3x62 as well. So I sold it to a friend who wanted an elk rifle. I'm kind of sorry that I did, now. That thing was a pocket rocket, light weight and hit like the hammer of Thor. Maybe I should start looking for another M96 . . .

Getting back to business.
A hard day at the office. ;D

Sight regulating was done today, on this 9.3, a .404 J and a 45-70 DR.
Lovely day out there. I know, it's a hard job, but someone has to do it.

The sights are set at 75yds and it only took about a dozen rounds. The last two landed in the bull about 2" apart and considering that my old eyes can't see the target too well, it's not bad.

I'll smooth all the sharp edges on the sight leaf and I'm ready to blue it all.
