Norma rifle quality
|
Hi Team, does anyone know anything about Norma rifles and their quality. Ive found one in 358 Norma magnum (yes I know ill have to reload etc etc )that Im pretty serious about but at this time I dont have a model type or number.

To my knowledge Norma has never made rifles itself. They only designed and produced the 308 and 358 Norma Magnum cartridges for use in rifles made by the Danish company Schultz and Larsen. Similarly Norma was the only manufacturer of the 7x61 Sharpe and Hart cartridge (designed by a couple of well known USA gun gurus) and Schultz and Larsen produced the only factory rifles for this 7mm magnum cartridge.
Plenty of rifles have been made up for these three cartridges by gunsmiths most often on a Mauser 98 action.

the "Norma " rifle is the Schultz&Larsen Mod. 65DL or the 68DL and was made from 1966 to 1970
1966 Norma catalog
you can read Norma on the barrel and Schultz&Larsen on the receiver
a Model 68 DL "Norma" rifle made in Otterup Danmark and not Denmark as usual
Norma and Schultz&Larsen had a very close relationship with each other. there was than a company called " A/S Dansk Ammunitionsfabrik Otterup" owned by Norma and Schultz&Larsen loading ammo especially for the danish market most times with components made by Norma.

Thanks for all this info. 1 last question....does anyone know anything about the actions? Im assuming the they are some sort of M 98 variant ? Controlled round feed or push feed ?

No the Danish S&H rifles, M60, M65 and M68 were a long way off a Mauser 98 and about 200% better IMO. They are a push feed round tube action with a small opening for cartridges to be ejected. They must be loaded from the bottom of the hinge cover magazine (rifle upside down, cover open and drop in the 3 magnum rounds). Can hold down the cartridges in the mag from the top and chamber a 4th round. The rifles have an excellent side safety on the bolt. The bolt is rear locking with four massive lugs and a short lift to open the bolt and is as smooth as any I have come across. The bolt can be dismantled with a simple hold back of a small protruding pin on the bolt shroud and a twist and the shroud and firing pin come out from the bolt body, making it easy to clean an lube anytime you want.
They have one of the best barrels in the business, very accurate and never seemed to foul. The trigger is second to none. No plastic on these guys.
Apparently these actions have been tested to over 120,000psi without any problems.
I owned and extensively use two S&H rifles, a M60 (cock on closing) and an M65 (cock on opening) in 7x61 S&H.

Don't walk, bloody run like hell and buy it. As already said, they have the smoothest action I know of, strong as an Ox and has the accuracy that other factory rifles dream of. The 358Norma magnum is a great round and would of been far more popular if the bullets of the day had been constructed to withstand the velocities generated by the Norma mag.

OK Team Ive got the hint. Im going to buy it. When I actually get it in my hands Ill put up some Pics.

FYI I have "Rifles of the World" 3rd edition by John Walter. Schmidt and Larsen get about a half a page mention but basically nothing on the actions.
Oh and what do I intend to use it for? In the main Sambar with either a 225 or 250 grain Woodleighs.

Good article there Gryph, thanks for putting that up. It's easy to see why you don't get many of them for sale.
If I came across one in 358 Norma, I'd buy it too.

I had my 308 Norma alongside when I photographed this fresh out of the bath stag..not that I took a poke but he wouldnt have noticed the difference if the 358 NM was used either.

no not the new place JH. I took the pic around 7 k`s from where you camped.
might stretch along the curves to 26. He is such a thumper in body that his 'head' looks smaller than it prob is.
I took some video of him also.To get that shot required a scramble of 800 yards straight down.

My brother has Husqvarna 1651 in .358 Norma. He customized it little bit with new McMillan stock and Recknagel scope mount.
.358 Norma is good caliber for big game. Recoil feeling is not bad and bullet availability is good for reloader. My brother uses old Norma factory ammo with Woodleigh and Swift A-frame bullets for hunting. He makes target loads with Hornady Round nose bullets.
Only (mild) concern is long range accuracy. He has not yet found very accurate load/bullet for his rifle. He hunts mostly moose, bear and boar so it is not a problem.
Now Norma offers only Jaktmatch and Oryx. How will Oryx handle the speed of .358 Norma? In .30-06 the 13 gram Oryx is perfect.

I've actually seen all three calibers (7x61, 308 NM and 358 NM) in S&L rifles whole a child in the 70's growing up on the Alaska Peninsula. They were owned by a bear guide who used the 7x61 for caribou and the 358 for the big coastal brown bears. Later on he got a 308 NM and pretty much retired the other two unless he had to go after a really big bear in the alders with the 358.
I reckon that had Norma not beat Winchester to the punch, they both would have been branded by their trade name and who knows if there would even be a 338 today.

Interesting stuff I never knew. How long have they been out and who are making rifles for them?
