CZ 550 American

Planning on getting one in .30-06. Do they seem like a good quality rifle, they look nice.

I just got one in .308W. They all seem to share the same action length except mine has a detachable magazine. Shoots great with factory ammo and I haven't handloaded for it yet.
Very 'agricultural' but strong in construction. I had to buy some tetra gun lube and work the bolt a couple of hundred times to smooth it out. The barrel cleaned up very quickly while shooting in. The only thing I had to get done was a trigger job to eliminate the horrendous set trigger. Scope mouints supplied are also very 'agricultural' but solid. A nice set of Warne rings would set it off nicely.
I would recommend this rifle as they all seem to shoot well from the box and are very ruggedly constructed.

Have to agree with tophet1. I have two in 375, with one soon to be converted to 404. Warne QD sight rings work well, and open sights line up quickly for close in shooting. Have never had a misfeed (apart from short stroking - my own fault). I like the set trigger, each to his own, I suppose. Would recommend them to anyone.

Possibly. I'm very happy with the weight of mine, but I like a little stability when I'm shooting and I'm also a little recoil shy so any extra weight is a plus. These are real rifles, not toys.
I'd submit the weight is subjective. Each to their own. To me, this rifle in .308W is the perfect camp rifle.

Same here. The weight makes shooting 375 quite comfortable. I found the recoil with the hogsback shaped stock uncomfortable, but the straight American stock is great, recoil-wise. The weight must help here, as well. It is not excessive, and you soon get used to it.

I have the FS version, but like it very much. Yes, heavy at 10 lbs scoped in 6.5x55. I like it, and would not hesitate to get another.
I did have to do some bedding work, but frankly, expect that from any factory rifle I buy.
I am also a set-trigger fan.
I owned a 527 with set trigger that when set was a few ounces. My 550 has a set trigger weight of about 1.5 lbs, which is to say it is in essence merely a light trigger, not really a set trigger in the traditional sense of an extremely light release. Regardless, I like it, too. I do understand some folks do not.

I have the CZ Safari classic in 375H&H. I love the gun. It weighs 9lbs and some odd ounces before I put the scope rings and sling on it. I was at the range the other day and it was very windy. It was the easiest rifle to hold on target in the wind. I have been shooting better groups with this gun than any of my other rifles. I have been more than pleased with this rifle.

Not sure why I didn't notice this before, but I understand the CZ's in .30-06 have a 1/12" twist. Probably no problem with up-to-180 grain bullets, but might be marginally stable for longer bullets and 220's.

Yeh i know, thats a real bummer. The whole reason i am getting the .30-06 is because i want to throw heavier bullets. I already have a .308.
Why couldn't they have made it 1/10" twist????

Have you considered the Voere which is available here in OZ ? You would have to check the barrel twist rate and pay a 30% premium on the CZ retail price but it may fit your needs.
