Quote: More of that goes on than is broadly known. An outfitter operating in the region once told me (about ten years ago) they had been invited to setup an operation to hunt tiger, Asian rhino and other game in Indonesia. They declined the "opportunity". Invitations to hunt various game in India still happen. All of it is "below the table" of course. If it was just hunting of the reasonably numerous deer or antelope species that still exist, other than being illegal, it wouldn't be the killing of very endangered species, but tiger or rhino??? Hard to justify on any ethical grounds unless it was officially sanctioned and actual PAC (problem animal control) hunts. Or as part of a real conservation management programme. Also jails in some of these countries are less than pleasant. It would be a shame if tigers no longer existed in the wild. Hopefully the countries still with viable populations one day soon get their act together. |
