Big bucks for a buck

Singaporean
pays $55,000
to hunt
markhore
ClllTRAL, March 23: A
Singapore hunter who wanted to
hunt a Kashmiri markhore with
bow and arrow and paid $55,000
fee for the purpose failed in his
bid.
Mr Wayne Lau obtained this
year's hunting pennit from the
wildlife department. He arrived
in Chitrallast week to hunt the
rare species with bow and arrow.
He tried his luck in the pastures
of Gahirait village, some 48km
from here, for two days but with-
out success.
He then used his rifle and shot
the anima! finally. The hunted
markhore is said to be nine-years-
old and measured 39 inches.
Mr Lau said on Thursday he
had been hunting in the forests of
America and Africa and was not
used to the hard and rough ter-
rains near Chitra! where mark-
hore is found. Hunting with arrow
requires the hunter to position
himself at a close range'
j
However, he said, bare terrains
devoid of trees gave the prey an '.
edge over the hunter.
.
He said the markhore hunting
in Chitral was the most expen-
sive owing to its remoteness and
the fabulous price of the hunting
pennit which is obtained in offi- !
cia! auction.-CorresPQndent
