There are a few places here now running donkeys for the Chinese trade. They have herds in the thousands and one place I have a little to do with is now part Chinese owned and they truck them to an abattoir in Qld for processing. I believe the meat is for for pet meat and the skins go to China. In the past the animals have seemed to breed well and live off some pretty marginal country so if the market is there will be interesting to see what happens.
No shortage of feral donkeys in the North and Kymberley. However when one and half billion Chinese get onto them, perhaps not as numerous.
Maybe we will see marginal cattle country running donkeys instead one day?
