I got my new (to me) Alexander Henry 500BPE double express rifle shooting and I wanted to take it out on the hill for axis deer. We spotting a small herd of deer down the hill about 300 yards or so. I went down the hill to make the sneek. To keep Mr. Henry company I thought it fitting to use an old set of early 1900s French binoculars I have. So with 100 year old binoculars and an even older double rifle I worked my way down a ditch to keep out of sight. I made it to about 130 or so yards and then my ditch ran out and there was thick brush between the deer and I making further crawling impossible. So I waited until a shoot able deer got into sight. After a little while a doe came up on a dirt mount over the brush and I got a shot off with the 200 yard leaf up. She went down. I take the old girl out on the hill again in June and see how she works out a second time and hopefully get a stag this time. |
