Re: DANGER OF SMALL-BORES FOR DANGEROUS GAME

That's quite a writup, tks, John.

The letters in Greener's 9th Edition speak quite favourably of the .577BPE on dangeous game. Seemed quite ineffective to me. A 650gr. bullet with 160gr. rifle powder at a supposed, 1,600fps.

I attempted to du;icate the .577BPE in my 32" custom .58 Hawken during the 1980's, a 650gr. roundnosed bullet, but only got it up to about 1,350fps with 1980's powders and stopped around 200gr. charge. Their powder was better than ours and I do not doubt the 'printed' ballistics for their load. They had no loss in pressure at the nipple, as I experienced.

I personally would prefer to use a 10 or 8 bore rifle for asian or African buffalo.

The .577 BPE would be perfect for ours.
