very interesting article, thats just about the time my family was leaving india. |

I remember reading about one of the last tiger-hunts conducted in India, perhaps the last tiger-hunt, by an older woman who bagged the tiger when it crossed open rock at the conclusion of a successful drive. Don't have that one tucked away somewhere do you, Nick? |

I do believe I may have the article from 1972, entitled: "The Bold, Bad Tiger of Ghatpiparia" by Jack O'Connor While the article makes no mention of this being the last tiger legally taken, it was shot by Jack's wife Eleanor who was probably in her sixties (?) at the time. |

Interesting if there were only 2000 tigers in 1972 yet 35 years later there are claims now of 3500 tigers in India (whether this is accurate or not). Habitat destruction and human encroachment are destructive forces on wildlife. Thanks Nick for posting. |

Nick: That may be the one, but I didn't remember it being Jack's wife Eleanor at the time I read it (probably 1972!). Any chance of tossing it up when you do your next session on the scanner? Looks like I need to refresh the ol' memory.... BTW, I was clicking away madly on the bold text in your post; damn link wouldn't open! |

Yes, those BOLD LINKS can be very difficult to open at times! I already have the article scanned and was planning to post it soon. I'll be sure to place a link to it here in the "Hunting in Asia" forum. From what you have told me, it sounds highly unlikely that it wasn't Eleanor O'Connor's giant cattle killing tiger. Afterall, how many "older woman" tiger hunters might there have been in 1972 India???? Wouldn't that be cool to be the last to take one? I hope it was Eleanor! |

Nick, Thank you very much for posting this lovely piece. Yes, it was habitat destruction that destroyed the tigers - from a forest cover of 40% of the country's land area at independence in 1947 to some 3% now, India has been irrepairably damaged by Indians. Very sad! |

Hi Mehul, Yes, it is heartbreaking ... the same story around the globe. Greed, short sighted government and general failure to provide for the masses. |
