Japanese and Russian Scientists May Be Able to Clone Mammoth

Jus' sayin'.
YAKUTSK, Russia – Japanese and Russian scientists might be able to clone a mammoth after confirming the presence of well-preserved bone marrow in a mammoth thighbone found in Siberian permafrost, Kyodo News reported.
The scientists from the Sakha Republic's mammoth museum and Kinki University's graduate school will begin research next year to regenerate the huge mammal, which became extinct about 10,000 years ago.
They will transplant nuclei from the bone marrow cells into elephant egg cells whose nuclei were removed through a type of cloning. The process can create an embryo that can be planted into an elephant womb for birth.

I think most Mammoth sub species were the same size as modern elephant's or smaller ?
But I also think they would deliver by Caesarean section to be on the safe side ?

Imagine the tusk size of one in say 80 years after birth ...
Aren't 100 pounder bulls quite old, as in 70 to a 100 years old? I forget what sort of age they are.

Seems to me, the Mammoths where smaller than modern day African elephants. They usually had larger 'teeth' though - of quite amazing shapes.

Columbian Mammoth (North American) up to 15 feet at shoulder.
There was a 17 footer in China.
I live in Mammoth/Mastodon country, there is a dig about 15 miles from my desk from which 7000 year old Mastodon bones/tusk were recovered. Yes it had tool marks on the bones and a point found in one of the bones.
There is a biogenetics company near Las Vegas working on a similar project.
Back in middle school (1961) I read a book titled "The Last Mammoth". Set in late 1600's Kentucky. About a Mammoth waging war on the Native American's maize fields. Could it have happened? More believable than Sasquatch!

Years ago I read of a similar project to clone quaggas in RSA.
Maybe that one died off with the changes, lack of funding or some thing in '94, not sure. Or maybe it's still going on?
I'd rather see quaggas than mammoths. W/ mammoths would, naturally, come the "need" to clone sabertoothed tigers and other Superpredators, no doubt.
Having said that, the desire to clone mammoths may be the first inkling that the scientific community is ready to give up on "Global Warming"!

Yes, apparently these scientists don't believe in global warming.
Unless they have some shearing program in the works! Imagine what the sweaters could sell for! Ha!

In about 10 years I think you might see a fair few extinct animals resurrected.
I noticed they just cloned a Cashmere Goat to increase the numbers.
