Japanese and Russian Scientists May Be Able to Clone Mammoth

Jus' sayin'.

YAKUTSK, Russia – Japanese and Russian scientists might be able to clone a mammoth after confirming the presence of well-preserved bone marrow in a mammoth thighbone found in Siberian permafrost, Kyodo News reported.
The scientists from the Sakha Republic's mammoth museum and Kinki University's graduate school will begin research next year to regenerate the huge mammal, which became extinct about 10,000 years ago.
They will transplant nuclei from the bone marrow cells into elephant egg cells whose nuclei were removed through a type of cloning. The process can create an embryo that can be planted into an elephant womb for birth.

Be good if they found similarly preserved tissue from Megaloceros

""Mother might need a C section though.""

I think most Mammoth sub species were the same size as modern elephant's or smaller ?

But I also think they would deliver by Caesarean section to be on the safe side ?

Imagine the tusk size of one in say 80 years after birth ...

Aren't 100 pounder bulls quite old, as in 70 to a 100 years old? I forget what sort of age they are.

Seems to me, the Mammoths where smaller than modern day African elephants. They usually had larger 'teeth' though - of quite amazing shapes.

Quite a trophy.

Columbian Mammoth (North American) up to 15 feet at shoulder.

There was a 17 footer in China.

I live in Mammoth/Mastodon country, there is a dig about 15 miles from my desk from which 7000 year old Mastodon bones/tusk were recovered. Yes it had tool marks on the bones and a point found in one of the bones.

There is a biogenetics company near Las Vegas working on a similar project.

Back in middle school (1961) I read a book titled "The Last Mammoth". Set in late 1600's Kentucky. About a Mammoth waging war on the Native American's maize fields. Could it have happened? More believable than Sasquatch!

Just to get excited ...

From Wikipedia:

Quote:

Like their modern relative the elephant (Asian or African), mammoths were quite large; in English the noun "mammoth" has become an adjective meaning "large" or "massive". The largest known species, Songhua River mammoth (Mammuthus sungari) , reached heights of at least 5 metres (16 ft) at the shoulder. Mammoths would probably normally weigh in the region of 6 to 8 tons, but exceptionally large males may have exceeded 12 tons. However, most species of mammoth were only about as large as a modern Asian elephant. Fossils of species of dwarf mammoth have been found on the Californian Channel Islands (Mammuthus exilis) and the Mediterranean island of Sardinia (Mammuthus lamarmorae). There was also a race of dwarf woolly mammoths on Wrangel Island, north of Siberia, within the Arctic Circle.
Cross-section of mammoth footprints (a type of trace fossil) at the Hot Springs Mammoth Site in South Dakota

An 11-foot (3.4 m) long mammoth tusk was discovered north of Lincoln, Illinois in 2005.[4]

Based on studies of their close relatives the modern elephants, mammoths probably had a gestation period of 22 months, resulting in a single calf being born. Their social structure was probably the same as that of African and Asian elephants, with females living in herds headed by a matriarch, whilst bulls lived solitary lives or formed loose groups after sexual maturity.

One of the big ones ...

But something seen at the beach.

Re: Japanese and Russian Scientists May Be Able to Clone Mammoth

Years ago I read of a similar project to clone quaggas in RSA.

Maybe that one died off with the changes, lack of funding or some thing in '94, not sure. Or maybe it's still going on?

I'd rather see quaggas than mammoths. W/ mammoths would, naturally, come the "need" to clone sabertoothed tigers and other Superpredators, no doubt.

Having said that, the desire to clone mammoths may be the first inkling that the scientific community is ready to give up on "Global Warming"!

Yes, apparently these scientists don't believe in global warming.
Unless they have some shearing program in the works! Imagine what the sweaters could sell for! Ha!

Update.

Quote:

First a plant from the past sprouted new life — now researchers in Russia and South Korea are moving forward with a plan to resurrect the Ice Age woolly mammoth. Scientists in both countries inked a deal Tuesday to share technology and research that could lead to the birth of a mammoth clone, gestated in a surrogate Indian elephant mother.

In about 10 years I think you might see a fair few extinct animals resurrected.

I noticed they just cloned a Cashmere Goat to increase the numbers.

A glimpse of one of the scientists behind the cloning effort

He sounds like a bit character out of an Ian Fleming novel.
