on 2011/11/25 13:32:42

PESHAWAR: The Wildlife department of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has sold permits for hunting of four Markhors and one Ibex in Chitral and Kohistan districts under the Trophy Hunting scheme.

The hunting season for current year will start from Dec 15 to March 2012, next, informed Chief Conservator Wildlife Department, Syed Mubarik Ali Shah.

Talking to APP, Mubarik Shah said sale of hunting permits were made through proper auction and bidders were asked through advertisement in press and internet to submit their offers.

The permits have been purchased by outfitters who will later invite foreign hunters for hunting.

The highest bid received was $ 95000 for Toshi Game Reserve in Chitral district while the second one is $ 90,000 for Shasha Game Reserve in the same district.

The figure of dollar 95000 is the highest amount on which the hunting permits is sold by wildlife department, adds Chief Conservator.

He said third permits of Markhor hunting is sold for Ghairat Game reserve at a price of dollar 70,500. While permits for Kohistan game reserve is sold at dollar 58,000. The ibex hunting permit is sold at dollar 3550.

Mubarik Shah said trophy hunting will be permissible only in community game reserves in District Chitral and Kohistan.

In the trophy hunting scheme, communities are involved in conservation of wildlife and the revenue generated from sale of hunting permits of protected animals were mostly spent on development of respective communities.

Being cynical one would suggest that 'the guv`s' would take the cream of the money.

I'm sure the local District Commissioner and the local Chief of Police and other politicians will appreciate the $$$.

I've seen how these guys are treated. Even the tourists were pushed out of the best parts of a Park (in India) when the Chief of Police wanted to visit, surrounded by his body bodyguards. Ridiculous.

Hopefully some trickles down to the real communities.

I imagine a hefty margin would be added to those numbers for the foreign clients by outfitters.

These schemes and consevative programs are all kosher and do benifit the community thru development of roads ,hospitals etc.The price is on the higher side but permits are sold thru open auction so one cannot complain. It is definately not a spin.

The number of Markhor have increased significantly in Pakistan, however the government is being short sighted and issuing very few permits to jack up the price when they could easily issue some more permits and reduce the price. Its all a matter of demand and supply I guess.

These are the rates of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.
The big population of markhor exist in the nothren ares of pakistan and last year permit of markhor auctioned in 45000 us $.Permit for markhor is available for forghen hunters only.Ibex is allowed for pakistani citizens also.
I hunted ibex and markhors many time in nothren areas and conections are subsitude of permit for any resourcefull person in pakistan.
Some ares of nothren ares are fully tribal and no writ of goverment there.
Locals poach a lot with any discrimination of male /female/young/old.Good population of markhor exist in these areas.
Marcopolo sheep also exist in some very difficult ares and i am being offerd to get one /two many times.
I might go for hunt in nothren ares next month

I've got a very strong feeling that North Americans would be foolish to travel to Pakistan for a hunting trip right now. You might just get a Taliban for a guide, or maybe ElQueda?

Daryl S
Your feeling is not right.
The areas where the community based hunts take place are completly safe and your hosts will handle you like flower. You will enjoy the trip for sure.
Only problem you may face is bad weather and bad roads nothing more.I think bad weather is not a problem for any north american.

Re: Anyone for Markhor @ 100 bigs plus

These programs are monitored by a UN agency and every precaution is taken to safeguard the hunter including police escort. Moreover the locals are keen to continue these programs and make sure nothing unsavoury happens.
Gryphon, snow leopard is on the endangerd list and cannot be hunted at any price.
The only requirement apart from cost is excellent physical condition as it is a very tough hunt in changing weather conditions. It may take weeks to find and hunt a markhor.
