Are there still "pet meating" operations ongoing in Australia? As I understand it from a few pieces I've read on the subject, at least some amount of Aussie-made pet food was once substantially made up of feral animal meat harvested by teams of rifle shooters. If this is correct, I am really curious about the field-to-retail logistics of such operations. For example, is a mobile abattoir set up or are operations only conducted in close proximity to slaughter/processing facilities. Where was the final product marketed? How was the harvest operation itself organized? With your vast distances there and hot weather the requirement for production efficiency and timeliness must be/have been great. I could sure use a history lesson here... |
