I can't answer that although I don't think I would take the chance. The day we arrived back in Darwin there was a report (in the N.T. News) of a tour guide being hit by a freshie and suffering some pretty severe injuries. I spent a lot of time in a canoe on the lagoon and managed to get within a few feet of a couple of big (about 5 foot)freshies, pretty powerful animals - they would take a fair size bite. As inviting as the water looks, swimming is a real no go zone up there.
