Quote: I could use lots of swear words, but in truth they are very efficient "recyclers" of anything made of meat that dies in the bush. A fairly large ant with strong mandibles, and not afraid to use them on anything or anyone they perceive as a threat, especially someone trying to remove bits of a fresh carcass they have "found". ![]() ...and they SWARM! Fortunately they only bite and can't sting. Close-up of the stag's eyes when I finally found him: ![]() He had been dead for no more than an hour but was covered in the little buggers. Tried repeatedly to brush them off for the photo but by the time I set the timer and jumped into frame they were back! Did I mention they were tenacious?! ![]() They have a strong smell of formic acid and need to be completely removed from the meat as soon as possible. I also trim the meat a bit more than might otherwise be needed before cutting it up. A single meat ant in the gob would definitely ruin the venison experience! ![]() |
