Last Update: Monday, September 26, 2005. 12:00pm (AEST) Croc blamed for snorkeller's death Northern Territory police believe a snorkeller who was found dead on Groote Eylandt, in the Gulf of Carpentaria, yesterday was killed by a crocodile. The 37-year-old man from Alyangula was snorkelling with a friend at the Picnic Beach recreation area when they drifted apart late on Saturday afternoon. Police searchers found his body yesterday morning one-and-a-half kilometres away in an area where a four metre crocodile had been seen swimming nearby. Acting Senior Sergeant Stephen Pfitzner says there is not much doubt the man was attacked by a croc. "Police strongly suspect that's what has occurred," he said. "There are a number of injuries on the deceased and also there was a crocodile sighted very close to where the deceased was located." |
