South Australia's 2019 duck hunting season is due to begin on Saturday 16 March 2019, and end on Sunday 30 June 2019. The 2019 quail hunting season is due to begin on Saturday 16 February 2019 and end on Saturday 31 August 2019. (Dec 23, 2018)

Shotguns up to 12 gauge and shot up to no2, from memory. Magazines up to 5 rounds. No pump action or semi auto shotguns. Requires a firearms licence and a duck and/or quail hunting permit. The duck permit requires the passing of a waterfowl ID permit .

No lead shot for waterfowl. Steel or bismuth shot.

Hunting on private land with andowner permission or during open days on public game hunting reserves. These reserves were purchased up to a hundred years ago with hunting permit fees. Now for decades these fees go to "general revenues" ...

Duck hunting 2019 open season

The open season applies for specific species of duck throughout the State from 15 minutes before sunrise on Saturday 16 March 2019 until 30 minutes after sunset on Sunday 30 June 2019. No shooting of any duck species is allowed between the period from 30 minutes after sunset on any given day of the open season and 15 minutes before sunrise of the next day. This means that hunters must only shoot duck from 15 minutes before sunrise and must stop shooting at 30 minutes after sunset.

Additional restrictions have been placed on open season hunting in some game reserves, so please refer below for specific opening times. More information can be obtained from the local Natural Resources Centre.
Open season

The duck species to which the open season applies is limited to the following:

Grey Teal (Anas gracilis)
Chestnut Teal (Anas castanea)
Pacific Black Duck (Anas superciliosa)
Australian Shelduck (Mountain Duck) (Tadorna tadornoides)
Maned (Australian Wood) Duck (Chenonetta jubata)
Pink-eared Duck (Malacorhynchus membranaceus)
Hardhead (Aythya australis)

A total bag limit of 8 ducks per hunter per day applies.
Closed season

Closed Season on the following duck species

Australasian (Blue-winged) Shoveler (Anas rhynchotis)

In 2019 Australasian (Blue-winged) Shoveler (Anas rhynchotis) are not allowed to be hunted due to sustainability concerns.

Restrictions have been placed on open season hunting in game reserves, so please refer to specific opening times for game reserves. More information can be obtained from the local natural resources centre.

Quail hunting 2019 open season

The open season for Stubble Quail (Coturnix pectoralis) throughout the state will commence from sunrise on Saturday 16 February 2019 and conclude at sunset on Saturday 31 August 2019 between the daylight hours from sunrise to sunset.
Bag limit

A total bag limit of fifteen (15) Stubble Quails in total per hunter per day applies.
Where can I hunt?

Quail hunting can only occur on private land with the written consent of the landholder.

These reserves will be open from 15 minutes before sunrise on Saturday 16 March 2019 until 30 minutes after sunset on Sunday 30 June 2019.
Bool Lagoon Game Reserve

Bool Lagoon Game Reserves is CLOSED for the 2019 open season.

The department may close a Reserve by posting a notice to that effect at any commonly used entrance to that Reserve, where it is in the interests of conservation to do so.
Game Reserves - Reserve information

Spatial exclusions exist within a number of South Australian Game Reserves. If hunting in Chowilla, Moorook, Loch Luna or Tolderol, refer to the information below.
Chowilla Game Reserve
The open season applies to the whole reserve, subject to the following exclusions:

for safety reasons, all of the area within 500 m radius centred upon the Chowilla Homestead, shearing shed, Lock 6 on the River Murray, the Chowilla Creek Regulator and Coombool Outstation (homestead) including any portion of creeks or waterbodies within 500 m of these sites.

Moorook Game Reserve

The open season applies to all the Reserve, subject to the following exclusions:

the western boundary of Sections 474, 475 and 476 Hundred of Moorook, County of Albert, adjacent to the Kingston-Loxton Highway.
an area of Wachtels Lagoon being the land and water contained within and bounded by a line commencing at E 442748, N 6210926, then south-easterly to E 443079, N 6210458, then south-easterly to E 443268, N 6209307, then westerly to E 442454, N 6209208, then north-easterly to E 441377, N 6209958, then north-easterly to the point of commencement.

All lines are geodesics based on the Geocentric Datum of Australia 1994 (GDA94).

Loch Luna Game Reserve

The open season applies to all creeks and associated backwaters of the Reserve excluding:

a 500 m radius of any house or outbuilding, and within 300 m of any road or bridge; and
for safety reasons, the open season does not apply to all of the area within 500 metres radius of the homestead of Section 706 McIntosh Division Hundred of Cobdogla Irrigation Area.

Note: Access to Loch Luna is mainly by boat – all hunters should be aware of dangerous quicksand in a number of areas.

Please contact the Natural Resources Centre - Berri for more information to ensure hunting only occurs in permitted areas.

Tolderol Game Reserve

The open season applies to the whole reserve, subject to the following exclusions:

the area of Tolderol Game Reserve being the land and water west of a line commencing at E 332052, N 6084977, south to E 332014, N 6083738.
