On a fishing trip with Bruce Ellison at his bush camp on the Ord river we came upon a dead croc floating in the river. We drew up next to it.The punt we were in was 12 feet long. There was easily 4foot past the end of that boat. He had been dead for a while as he had gassed up and the gas was bubbling out from the skin, we didn't to hang about partly because of the smell and partly that some of his mates may have been feeding off him .He had lost a rear leg at some stage in his long life.
A few days later we were told that some ringers from Carlton Hill station had found the body and had dragged it ashore and removed the head. The head may still be at Carlton, this was before Kerry Packer bought it so the skull may have moved on. Apparently it was a 20 foot croc.I know the one that we saw was 16 feet not 20.
