John, the .303 was a very popular caliber in the sub-continent during the days of the Raj and still is to some extent.For hunting ofcourse the 416 Rigby was very popular.Even now in the tribal area you will find tribesmen carrying the 303 full stock and swear that it is the most accurate rifle ever made.They will use it to hunt anything that moves(including their enemies).
