Homer,
As often I have said before, how wonderful it would be to see the great plains game species of Africa on our "savannahs". Zebra, wildebeest, impala, springbok, gemsbok, eland. Plus the woodland species of kudu, sable, roan. And herds of cape buffalo, would they interbreed with water buffalo???
Some of these do exist in Australia. I had a chat recently to a guy who has a number of species of deer and antelope. He reported some of the antelope species suffer from certain diseases and other issues in Australia. Maybe a reason some of them have not thrived? Some of those I named do exist or have existed in Australia.
Fairly sure I've chatted to the same farmer The Asian deer are more susceptible to a number of diseases than reds and fallow. Very interesting when you consider the terraforming role of sheep grazing in the establishment of invasive plants in Australia - the weeds became available for Asian deer to munch on but the diseases in sheep kept the populations in check. In the past decade has the decline in wool industry given Asian deer populations a chance to grow?
