Nice country and very nice rifle. My nephew shot his 14" trophy Tahr at only 100m in steep alpine country in South Westland so you never know when a close shot will present itself. Open sights? depends how good your eyes are, plenty of game have been shot at long range with open sights but the scope sight sure helps when the ranges are longer or light getting poor. A lighter bullet in the 9.3 would help with the longer range shots, but then if you know your rifle and load, the heavy bullet will do the job too.
