I must say though that I can see why the Romans used the Gladius it is very efficient. By that I mean effortless, the long taperd point then the width leave no doubt as to the quickness of dispatching the animal. It may sound strange but the quickness makes it remarkably humane IMO. Maybe there is a reason the old traditional way to dispatch a stag in Central European type countries was with a long stag antlered short sword. I forget the name the Germans gave the short sword.
