Commercial exports may be permitted for specimens taken in accordance with the provisions of an approved wildlife trade management plan. Wildlife trade management plans must meet the requirements specified in section 303FO of the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (the EPBC Act) in order to be approved.

The Management Program for the Saltwater Crocodile in the Northern Territory of Australia, 2009 - 2013 was approved by the former Minister, Hon. Peter Garrett, on 29 September 2009 with the condition that safari hunting is not permitted in the Northern Territory.

The amended management plan includes safari hunting of 50 adult animals per year. This proposal has been prepared by the Northern Territory Department of Natural Resources, Environment, the Arts and Sport (NRETAS). If approved, it is proposed that the new plan with the inclusion of safari hunting will be in force until 31 December 2014.

In accordance with the provisions of section 303FR of the EPBC Act, you are invited to comment on this proposed management plan that includes safari hunting. The Minister must consider public comments when deciding whether to approve a wildlife trade management plan.

Please note that the major difference between the current approved management plan and the proposed management plan is Appendix 5, which is the draft guidelines for safari hunting. Minor changes have also been made in other parts of the management plan related to safari hunting. Changes to the current approved plan are highlighted in yellow throughout the proposed plan. Please submit your written comments by 31 July 2012. Please include your full name and address in your submission.
