Maybee thats just because there are more mozzies with a bit of moisture around and its the mozzies that spread it.Rabbits will survive mixo if they are given (or can find food) it mostly just blinds them. I remember when calici first appeared, and I don't know if it was correct but it was said that any that survive will then be immune, dunno about thier offspring.
