My mate built it as a project gun he's a gunsmith in Uralla, NSW. He built it and said 'Hey you know how you were going to build a 45-70 on a SMLE? Well I did one, do you want it?' How could I say no? Saved me the work. The only thing is we both decided not to remove any action material to make the 45-70 rim fit, so I turn the cases down to 14.5mm and put a slight extraction groove in the web of the case 0.20mm deep. Not a big deal seeing as its just my 'big stuff' gun, its unlikely that I'll go through too many cases. I'm thinking next time I go out it's a 303 hunt and I'll pack some 215gn Woodleighs in my No1 Mk3. Although seeing how effective the 45 was its going to be hard not to take it! |
